The world of publishing is about to come full circle... well, minus the hiring of scribes part.

Long ago, authors published and promoted their own work. Then publishing companies came along and started taking all the money.

This was, perhaps, most evident in the music business. Record companies own the publishing rights to the songs, take a cut of the money, and control how the songs are used. You may recall that Michael Jackson outbid Paul McCartney for the publishing rights to most of the Beatles's songs and until he sold them, he was taking in 50% of the royalties for songs he didn't write. Many groups now set up their own labels to exercise more control over their art and to receive more profit from it.

This is the direction publishing is going.

Today, the biggest seller of books is Amazon and digital books outsell print books. (But don't worry, print books still sell like crazy.)
